From Shingles to Rubber

How many different kinds of roofs can you spot on the houses on your street? A few decades ago, you may have only seen shingle roofs, perhaps with the occasional slate roof mixed in. But these days, there are more kinds of roofing on the market. Metal roofs are becoming common because they can be made from recycled materials. Tile is a popular choice because it lasts a lot longer than other roofing materials. And then there are some roofers who install rubber roofs because they're smooth and easy to install. Learn more about roofs of all types on this blog.

How To Tell Your Shingle Roof Requires A Replacement

Your shingled roof should keep the elements out and protect your valued possessions from damage. Unfortunately, there will come a time when the roofing system will fail due to everyday exposure to weather elements. When this happens, you'll need to decide whether to repair or replace the roof. If you've been caught up in such a dilemma, this article will help you make this vital decision. Read on to learn the signs that your roof needs replacing.

Shingles Are Buckling

Buckling shingles usually resemble a distorted wave and often signal a need for a new roof. It is important to know what causes shingles to buckle. The causes of roof buckling include old age and poor installation. When it comes to buckling, you do not need to go up your roof to confirm it since it's evident from the ground. So when you see buckling shingles, the right thing to do is to engage your roof installation contractor for an immediate replacement.

Shingles Lifting

Shingles that seem to be pulling off your roof may require a replacement. Lifting shingles increase the possibility of leaks during a rain or snow storm. So, you should call a roofer to check the extent of the damage once you notice lifted shingles. In most cases, this problem emanates from poor sealing, which can result from poor installation or unevenness of the roof.

The Granules Are Missing

If your roof surface looks bare, the granules are wearing off, and such shingles can no longer protect you from weather elements. With time they will become brittle and crack or break at the slightest impact. Therefore, you have to install new ones soonest possible.

Loss of granules usually results from valley drainage that's improperly designed or when the eaves trough is insufficient. To remedy this issue, let an expert roofer correct the errors. Otherwise, ignoring missing granules could prompt the need for a complete shingle re-roofing.

Moss or Mold Issues

You should get concerned if you notice your roof is full of mold or moss. These growths often reflect the dampness of the roof. If ignored, they'll cause the roof not only to leak but also affect your home's curb appeal. The widespread growth of mold and moss demands a complete roof replacement. Most importantly, you should engage your roofer for not only regular roof inspections but also cleaning.

These are some of the indicators that your roof is deteriorating and needs to be replaced. Contact your roofing installation contractor when you notice these signs to avoid additional problems.
