From Shingles to Rubber

How many different kinds of roofs can you spot on the houses on your street? A few decades ago, you may have only seen shingle roofs, perhaps with the occasional slate roof mixed in. But these days, there are more kinds of roofing on the market. Metal roofs are becoming common because they can be made from recycled materials. Tile is a popular choice because it lasts a lot longer than other roofing materials. And then there are some roofers who install rubber roofs because they're smooth and easy to install. Learn more about roofs of all types on this blog.

Getting Your Home Ready to Have a New Roof Installed

A roof installation is one of the most intensive and complicated home improvement projects that a person may have to oversee. While there are many contractors that will be able to handle the work involved with removing the previous roof and installing the new one, there are still some steps that the homeowner will need to take in order to prepare for this project.

Find a Safe Area to Park Your Vehicles

During the course of the roof removal and installation, large amounts of debris will be produced. Much of this debris may fall from the sides of the home, and if you happen to park close to the house, this could put your vehicle at risk of suffering damage. For those with a garage, there may be times during the roofing work when the garage is inaccessible. As a result of these realities, it is often advisable to find somewhere on your property that will be far enough from the house that you can park your vehicle and avoid these problems.

Have Any Satellite Dishes Removed

There are many homes that will use satellite connections for their television and internet. For these homes, the roof may be the best area to place the satellite dish. Unfortunately, this can pose problems during the roof installation. In order to avoid damaging the satellite dish and to ensure the contractors can complete their tasks, these dishes will need to be removed. Fortunately, satellite providers will often be able to dispatch a technician to your home that can handle the removal of the satellite dish as well as placing it back on the home when the new roof has been installed. Depending on your property's view of the sky, these technicians may be able to temporarily place the satellite dish on the ground so that you can still get partial service.

Protect Any Items That Are Stored in the Attic Space

Many homeowners will use their attics as a storage space. This can be a convenient option for keeping items that you may rarely need. However, these items should be covered prior to the start of the roofing work. During the course of the roof's removal and replacement, powerful vibrations can be created, and this could cause large amounts of dust or other debris to fall onto the items that are being stored. By covering these items with a breathable fabric, you can shield them from the bulk of the dust while avoiding the risk of condensation getting trapped against these items.
